About two weeks ago the South Netherlands Philharmonic launched the new i-classics i-classics format, promising a surprising and interdisciplinary journey through todays word of art and technology. The first project Music & Theatre was received with enthusiasm by the audiences in Eindhoven, Maastricht and Tilburg.
Today the orchestra announced four projects in the season 2017-2018 of great variety.
In i-classics Music & Technology the orchestra shall collaborate with the experimental company Crew Online with the intention to visualize how technology is changing us. The art form that is used for this purpose and that quite simply engages the body of the spectator, is immersion. The makers intend to provide an experience of the music by Beethoven through different angles that was not possible to be experienced before. The orchestra is led by the fine and charismatic conductor Kristiina Poska. (Eindhoven, Strijp S, November 1st and Maastricht, Muziekgieterij, November 2nd, 2017).
i-classics Music & Fashion will present the orchestra with conductor Carel Deseure on the catwalk. In collaboration with the young dance and performance collective Club Guy & Roni’s Poetic Disaster Club and composer/ songwriter David Dramm the orchestra intends to present a witty experience of music, design, fashion, movement and science-fiction. What exactly it will be is unknown yet. (Eindhoven Klokgebouw, March 15; Tilburg Koepelhal, March 16 and Maastricht, Muziekgieterij, March 17, 2018)
In the i-classics Music & Film edition the orchestra will perform Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe while the audience is watching Lucas van Woerkum’s Symphonic Cinema version of that work. Van Woerkum and Chief-conductor Dmitri Liss will introduce the audience into the work and the movie. ((Eindhoven Oktober 1st, 2017)
And a series of i-classics New-Years-Concerts will be provide the opportunity to an enlarged concert experience. The award winning visual artists Paul and Menno de Nooijer will create a video installation for the concert-hall that enriches a fairly traditional program of Waltzes and Polka’s. The orchestra is led by Kees Bakels (Tilburg January 4, 2018, Breda January 5, 2018 and Eindhoven, January 6, 2018).

I will cover the i-classics projects on this blog. And let you know what each project finally looked like and to what extend it was actually able to enlarge the symphonic music practice for musicians and the audiences.
